Garni Temple: Armenia’s Ancient Pagan Wonder

A Must-See Place Near Yerevan

Garni Temple is one of Armenia’s most famous landmarks and the only Greco-Roman temple in the region. Just 30 km from Yerevan, this stunning site sits on a cliff overlooking the Azat River Gorge, offering breathtaking views. When you are traveling to Armenia, this ancient pagan temple is a must-see!

A Look into History

Built in the 1st century AD, Garni Temple was dedicated to Mihr, the Armenian sun god. It was commissioned by King Tiridates I, who brought influences from the Roman Empire to Armenia.

The temple’s 24 tall columns, grand entrance, and detailed carvings make it look like something straight out of Ancient Rome! Unlike many other pagan temples, Garni survived after Armenia adopted Christianity in 301 AD. It likely remained because it was used as a royal summer house.

Sadly, an earthquake in 1679 destroyed the temple. But thanks to careful reconstruction in the 1970s, we can still admire its beauty today!

You can get there by:

  • Taxi or Rental Car – The easiest way, with scenic views along the road.
  • Guided Tours – Many Armenia tours include Garni and Geghard as a package.
  • Public Transport – Take a minibus (marshrutka) from Yerevan’s Gai Bus Station to Garni village, then walk or take a short taxi ride to the temple.
