Welcome on board, hikers! Welcome to Armenia – a perfect country for hiking!
Yerevan, the pink jewel of Armenia, eagerly awaits us to explore its streets and uncover its cultural treasures. As one of the oldest cities in the world, Yerevan is graced by the majestic Mother Armenia statue, perched on a high hill. This monument will captivate us with its deep symbolism for Armenia, and its people, and the breathtaking panoramic view it offers over the city. No visit to Yerevan is complete without experiencing the Cascade Complex and Northern Avenue, where the city’s modern flair shines through in its cafes, restaurants, shops, and contemporary design. Our stroll from the Cascade to Northern Avenue will lead us to Republic Square—the vibrant heart of the capital. But our day isn’t over yet; we’ll also explore the largest wine factory in Armenia and visit the Ararat brandy museum. As the evening approaches, a welcome dinner will be prepared for us, bringing the day to a perfect close.

On the second day, we’ll embark on a fantastic hike starting from one of Armenia’s ancient treasures—the pagan temple of Garni. This is the sole remaining trace of Armenia’s pre-Christian past. Perched on the edge of a gorge, Garni offers us breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, Khosrov State Reserve, and the river below. With no time to waste, we’ll continue our journey on foot. Just below the temple, another marvel awaits the “Symphony of Stones.” While the temple is a remarkable architectural feat, the Symphony of Stones is a natural wonder, resembling a grand organ with its unique formations. After taking in this spectacular sight, we’ll press on with our hike, as Armenia has even more to reveal. Amidst stunning vistas and captivating spots, our hike will lead us to the 13th-century Armenian medieval monastery, Havuts Tar. This monastery, steeped in solitude and surrounded by awe-inspiring nature, features ancient medieval carvings and cross-stones renowned for their artistry. Our journey back will retrace our steps, concluding the day’s adventure.

Imagine experiencing a day as grand as Moses parting the Red Sea with the Jewish nation—that’s the feeling you’ll get at our next stop: Angels’ Canyon. This natural wonder feels like a divine adventure. Over time, a river flowing through the canyon changed its course, creating a stunning masterpiece for us to admire. While the “Symphony of Stones” is a result of volcanic activity, the Canyon represents the river’s imprint on the land. Nature has truly crafted something special in Armenia. Though small in size, this unique canyon, with its yellow-red rocks and boulders, is not only a marvel of natural beauty and mystery but also has a touch of healing power thanks to the mineral-rich waters in the area. Continue with a hike to Smbataberd, a medieval fortress perched on a hill in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor province. The hike offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Once at the top, explore the ancient ruins, including defensive walls and towers, and visit the small chapel dedicated to St. George. After our hike, we’ll transfer to Yeghegadzor for a well-deserved rest and overnight stay. The Vayots Dzor region is renowned for its wine production, so be sure to pick up some excellent wines from the local wineries before we continue.

For our next adventure, we’ll set our sights on climbing the high mountains, where Armenian highlands were once revered as divine. In ancient times, the higher a church or temple was located, the more likely it was believed to be heard by God. We’ll embark on this spiritual journey starting from Vernashen village, heading towards the Spitakavor Monastery, nestled amidst towering peaks. This trail is more challenging compared to the path to Angels’ Canyon, but the rewards are well worth it. As we navigate through rugged rocks and deep gorges, we’ll have the chance to not only appreciate the local flora but also spot bezoar goats, native to Armenia. Can you imagine encountering these majestic animals? Upon reaching Spitakavor Monastery, we’ll explore the monastery complex, including the main church with its intricate sculptures and reliefs. This journey promises a rich blend of cultural and regional exploration, making for an unforgettable adventure.

As our tour nears its end, we must not overlook Armenia’s gem—Lake Sevan and its surrounding mountains. We’re offering a distinctive hiking experience on Mount Armaghan, an extinct volcano near Lake Sevan. This hike will present a unique challenge, but the breathtaking views of the Geghama Mountains and Armenia’s largest lake will make the effort worthwhile. But our adventure doesn’t end here. Armenia is more than just mountains, hikes, and monasteries. We can’t forget about its delectable cuisine, with cheese playing a crucial role. We’ll visit a local family cheese farm where we can savor cheeses aged in wine and brandy. To conclude the day, we’ll enjoy a scenic drive along Lake Sevan to Dilijan, where our hotel awaits us.

We’ll delve into a lush forest trail in the Tavush region, heading towards the enchanting Lastiver Waterfalls. The path is relatively easy but treats us to stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The trail sometimes skirts the edge of a deep canyon, providing dramatic vistas as we approach the Lastiver Waterfalls. Here, we’ll take a brief pause to enjoy some herbal tea and soak in the serene surroundings. Our hike will then lead us back to the trailhead, where we’ll head to Yell Extreme Park. This park offers a range of exciting activities, including a rope park, horse riding, and the longest zip line in Armenia. In the evening, we’ll make our way to Dsegh village for some rest and overnight accommodation.
